Netflix daredevil season 1 series#
In conversations with the cast and crew from a set visit earlier this year, including new series showrunner Erik Oleson (whose previous credits include that other gritty superhero series, Arrow on The CW), we learned how the long-awaited third chapter of Matt Murdock’s saga is bringing Hell’s Kitchen back to its grounded and gritty roots. But there’s some new, terrible (and for audiences, thrilling) things brewing in Hell’s Kitchen. Three years after it debuted on Netflix, Daredevil Season 3, premiering October 19 on Netflix, still follows Matt Murdock (Cox), a blind lawyer and vigilante still making bad decisions and letting fear get the better of him. “You can look at him and see someone who is a moral, upstanding member of society, and in the same breath see him as an absolute menace.” “He’s a walking contradiction in everything he does,” the weary 35-year-old English actor tells a group of journalists on the set of Marvel’s Daredevil Season 3, dried blood still on his lips. Thanks to a wonderful performance by Vincent D’Onofrio – who, may I dare say, deserves at least a Golden Globe nomination for his work here – viewers are able to connect with the intimidating Fisk – a luxury that we rarely have, as we are often given no other incentive but to root for the “Good Guy.”įor the literary scholars out there, the show may make for an interesting analysis as the writers seem to have drawn inspiration from Aristotle’s Poetics and may have made a tragic hero out of a character that could have otherwise been represented in a two-dimensional light.Įntertaining and mentally stimulating, Netflix’s Daredevil: Season 1, is storytelling at it’s finest. On a muggy early April morning in Brooklyn, inside a Greenpoint warehouse besieged by factories and parking lots, Charlie Cox reveals Daredevil’s soul. What Goddard and his crew have done here is that they have chosen to give the viewers a chance to better acquaint themselves with the corrupt and malicious businessman, Wilson Fisk ( Vincent D’Onofrio.) As audiences are introduced to the circumstances surrounding Fisk’s turbulent upbringing in New York’s “Hell’s Kitchen” and later let into Fisk’s love life, they are allowed to sympathize and maybe even empathize with the temperamental man.

In many cinematic features, especially in cable programming or full length features within the action or drama genres, t he antagonist’s role in the story is simple: he or she is a wrongdoer, a potentially lethal threat to those around them and they must be stopped at all costs. With that said, I believe that the show is elevated above many others in the genre (whether it be on the big or small screen) due to one defining element: the show’s willingness to give it’s central villain a voice.

( Notice how I said film making … it’s a TV show but the season’s overall quality was better than any film I’ve seen so far this year.) – seem to effortlessly gel together to deliver a delightful viewing experience.

It’s one of those rare cases where several components of the film making process – the acting, lighting, writing, editing, directing, etc. I think Goddard’s take on one of Marvel’s darker heroes succeeds for several reasons. So, what makes the opening season of the show outstanding? What prevents the series from being quickly forgotten amidst the legion of other live action adaptations in the Marvel Universe? What happens on screen is fantastic, but I think that those working behind the camera should be given immense credit for the show’s magic. Somehow, something far more remarkable than anything I could have anticipated was created during Daredevil’s first season. Having set my expectations high, I had surely set myself up for disappointment throughout the rest of the season’s 12 episodes.

It was a little brash on my part t o have quickly given the series such stellar reviews based solely on the inaugural episode. DeKnight, for having delivered a beautifully shot show that is just as visually stunning as it is both emotionally and intellectually riveting. I’ve already praised the crew, spearheaded by creator Drew Goddard and executive producer Steven S. If you’ve read my previous post on the show’s first episode, I instantaneously praised the series’ creators for giving the comic book hero the quality live action adaptation he deserves. Based on Marvel’s blind attorney turned vigilante by night, the character has always been one of my favourites since first reading the original source material nearly a decade ago. A few months ago, I wrote a blog post after watching the pilot episode of Netflix’s latest original series, Daredevil.
